Yam + Almond Butter Brownies

Yam + Almond Butter Brownies

A Cozy, Blood-Sugar–Balanced Brownie (Perfect for Family Movie Night)

Some recipes just feel like they were made for slow weekends, when everyone’s home, relaxed, and there’s a movie queued up that everyone actually agrees on.

My daughter made this for us over the past long weekend to enjoy during movie night while watching Project Hail Mary. I'm happy that she can find recipes like this that she can make as a treat that feel indulgent but are also a bit more balanced.

This brownie is rich, fudgy, chocolatey, and surprisingly nourishing compared to traditional brownies. The base of yam and almond butter gives it a dense, satisfying texture without needing a ton of refined flour or sugar. And yes, it still feels like dessert!

Why this recipe works

Instead of relying on refined flour and sugar, this recipe leans on:

  • Cooked mashed yam for natural sweetness and structure
  • Almond butter for healthy fats and richness
  • Eggs for lift and binding
  • Cocoa powder for deep chocolate flavour

The result is a fudgy bake that feels like a brownie-meets-chocolate-cake situation—just a little more grounded.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup cooked mashed yam
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup almond butter
  • 2/3 cup maple syrup
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2/3 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp sea salt
  • Optional: dark chocolate chips (we skip these, it’s already very rich)
  • Flaky sea salt for topping

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large bowl, mix together:
    • mashed yam
    • eggs
    • almond butter
    • maple syrup
    • vanilla extract
  3. Stir until smooth and well combined.
  4. Add cocoa powder, baking soda, and sea salt. Mix until fully incorporated.
  5. Pour into a lined or greased baking dish and smooth the top.
  6. Bake for 25–35 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out mostly clean (a few moist crumbs are perfect).
  7. Let cool slightly, then sprinkle with flaky sea salt before slicing.

Why it's now on our regular rotation of healthy desserts

This isn’t a “perfect health food brownie” pretending to be dessert. It’s genuinely satisfying, but it also doesn’t leave everyone crashing an hour later.

That balance matters, especially for family nights when you want something sweet without it feeling like a sugar overload.

And if it happens to pair well with a good sci-fi movie and a couch full of blankets? Even better!
